The Project

The Bronx Ball is a signature celebration of the borough, bringing together civic, business, and community leaders to recognize the people and institutions shaping its future

For the 2021 event, E218 saw an opportunity to create an elegant gala experience in a location that reflected the Bronx’s own story of transformation.  That search led us to The Peninsula, a newly redeveloped campus on the former grounds of the Spofford Juvenile Detention Center. The setting had historical significance, but realizing its potential as an event venue would require an ambitious production.

We had just 21 days to turn an unfinished industrial warehouse into a sophisticated space for one of the borough’s signature celebrations.

The Vision & Challenge

Finding the right venue was our first major decision

An outdoor college campus was among the locations being considered, and while it offered an attractive setting, the grassy conditions, moisture, and resident geese raised some practical concerns about hosting a formal event there.  As we explored alternatives, we toured The Peninsula.

The former detention center site was being transformed into a mixed-use campus with affordable housing and commercial opportunities, including spaces intended to support food-service businesses owned by people of color. For us, that transformation made the location particularly compelling. It offered a chance to celebrate the Bronx in a place that reflected the borough’s evolving identity.

The challenge was making the space work.  The proposed venue was an unfinished, 11,000-square-foot warehouse without air conditioning or sufficient restroom facilities. Hosting a formal gala there meant creating much of the infrastructure that a conventional event venue would already have in place.  Before committing to the location, we needed to determine whether that investment made practical and financial sense.

We compared the cost of bringing temporary air conditioning into the warehouse with the expense of renting a large event tent. Once we established that cooling the warehouse was the more economical option, the decision became clear.  The Peninsula would host the Bronx Ball.

With the location selected, we had 21 days to make it event-ready.

The E218 Approach

Our first priority was making the warehouse comfortable and functional for guests. Once that foundation was in place, we could build the atmosphere the occasion deserved

To cool the space, we sourced two 70-ton air-conditioning units and a 300-kilowatt generator, coordinating installation and operations with the facilities team. We also had to think through how guests would reach the venue, so we hired a valet company and worked with the NYPD to arrange a nearby street closure.  Because parking and access could be concerns, we made sure guests received information about the valet service in advance.

With those logistics addressed, we turned our attention to the arrival experience.  A red carpet welcomed guests from the curb, leading them through check-in, past a large step-and-repeat backdrop, and into the main dining space. We wanted that progression to feel intentional, allowing guests to move comfortably from the street into an environment that felt appropriate for a formal gala.

Inside, the transformation required considerably more than décor.

We created a temporary catering kitchen using rented ovens, freezers, and preparation tables. Upscale portable restroom facilities were brought in, while adjoining rooms were converted into dedicated restroom areas with pipe and drape, illuminated dressing mirrors, full-length mirrors, and carefully selected amenities.

These practical elements were essential to making the event work. With them accounted for, we could give the warehouse an entirely different atmosphere while preserving some of its industrial character.

Fourteen-foot crystal columns were suspended from the 24-foot ceilings, gently swaying in the airflow from the cooling system above. Red uplighting and theatrical lighting brought warmth to the room, while strategically placed draping softened the surrounding architecture.

White table linens, red napkins, and arrangements of red roses with gold accents completed the setting.

Each detail contributed to the same experience. Guests could arrive comfortably, move through the venue with ease, and enjoy an elegant evening in a space that, just weeks earlier, had been an unfinished warehouse.

The Experience & Outcome

In just three weeks, we transformed an unfinished industrial warehouse into a fully functioning gala venue, complete with climate control, electrical infrastructure, catering facilities, restroom accommodations, valet service, audiovisual production, lighting, and decorative design

The transformation demonstrated what could be accomplished through thoughtful planning, strong vendor coordination, and a willingness to see possibilities in an unconventional space.  The location also gave the evening a deeper connection to the borough it celebrated. A site once associated with juvenile incarceration had become the setting for a gathering of Bronx civic, business, and community leaders.

For E218, bringing the Bronx Ball to The Peninsula meant creating an experience that honored both the occasion and the evolving story of the place itself.
